Sonos Sub 4: Premium Wireless Subwoofer

Available in black or white.

The Sonos Sub 4 is a high-output wireless subwoofer designed to deliver deep, dynamic bass while offloading low-frequency processing from paired home theatre soundbars or active streaming speakers. Built on an updated hardware platform, the Sub 4 features refreshed internal processing power, expanded memory, upgraded Wi-Fi 6 wireless radios, and an updated matte-finish enclosure that aligns visually with modern Sonos soundbars and ambient speakers.

Acoustic Architecture and Force-Cancelling Engineering

The core acoustic structure of the Sub 4 utilizes dual 5x8-inch elliptical woofers mounted face-to-face inside a precision-engineered ported enclosure. Powered by dual Class-D digital amplifiers, these inward-firing drivers create a natural force-cancelling effect that neutralises mechanical cabinet vibration and eliminates distortion. This enables the subwoofer to reproduce clean low frequencies down to 25 Hz without mechanical buzz, cabinet rattling, or unwanted resonance.

By pairing the Sub 4 with an active home theatre setup, the host soundbar automatically delegates low-frequency playback to the subwoofer. This frees up the mid-range and high-frequency drivers in the main soundbar or satellite speakers, improving clarity, dynamic range, and spatial soundstage separation across movies and music.

System Tuning, Dual-Sub Configurations, and Placement

The Sub 4 integrates with Sonos Trueplay room calibration software, using mobile measurement microphones to measure room boundaries and automatically balance frequency response to suit local room acoustics. Manual bass, treble, and loudness controls remain accessible within the Sonos app interface.

For large open-plan living spaces or dedicated home theatre installations, the system supports dual-subwoofer setups. A pair of Sub 4 units can be bound to flagship soundbars like the Sonos Arc or Arc Ultra, increasing total low-end output, smoothing out acoustic room nodes, and delivering even bass coverage across multiple seating positions. The enclosure supports versatile physical placement, operating either standing upright on its integrated rubber feet or laid flat on its side to tuck beneath low-profile furniture.
