Inspection welcome.
The Mackie Onyx 1640i is a flagship analog mixing console that features a deeply integrated 16x16 digital audio interface. Designed for both professional project studios and live sound reinforcement, this mixer bridges the gap between classic analog control and modern digital audio workstation (DAW) workflows. Its full channel-streaming capability allows users to route individual channels, auxiliary sends, subgroups, or the master mix directly into a computer for high-resolution multitrack recording.
Premium Analog Signal Path and Perkins EQ
The foundation of the Onyx 1640i is its studio-grade analog hardware. It is equipped with 16 boutique-quality Onyx microphone preamplifiers, which offer 60 dB of gain, wide dynamic range, and exceptional rejection of radio frequency interference. The first two channels also feature dedicated High-Impedance Hi-Z instrument switches, allowing for the direct connection of acoustic or electric guitars without requiring an external direct injection DI box.
Every channel strip features Mackie's signature Perkins EQ, a 4-band configuration with dual swept-mid frequencies. Modelled after classic British console circuits, the Perkins EQ provides highly musical control over the audio spectrum with a wider, smoother filter slope. An EQ in/out switch on each channel lets engineers preview changes instantly, while a sharp 18 dB per octave, 75 Hz low-cut filter eliminates floor vibrations and low-frequency rumble before the signal reaches the fader.
Advanced FireWire Routing and Multi-Bus Architecture
The Onyx 1640i stands out due to its flexible 16-input by 16-output FireWire streaming protocol. Each channel is equipped with a pre/post switch that determines whether the digital audio signal sent to the DAW is captured raw directly after the preamp, or downstream after processing by the Perkins EQ. Beyond standard channel recording, a series of master section routing buttons allows users to send auxiliary sends 1 through 6, subgroups 1 through 4, or the primary Left/Right master mix directly to digital tracks.
The physical routing capabilities are equally comprehensive. The console features 6 auxiliary sends with pre/post fader switching, 4 subgroups with independent 60mm master faders, and a dedicated talkback section with an integrated microphone that can be routed to monitors or the digital stream. For seamless studio installation, the mixer utilises a unique RotoPod rotating I/O pod. This mechanical system allows the entire rear connector panel to be rotated to the back or bottom of the chassis, facilitating flush integration into standard 19-inch racks or studio furniture.
Legacy System Note and Compatibility
Because this console relies on FireWire connectivity, hardware compatibility with modern computer hardware requires specific consideration. To interface with modern operating systems, the use of certified legacy PCIe FireWire host cards or stable hardware adapter chains such as FireWire to Thunderbolt adapters is necessary. Driver support is native via Core Audio on older macOS releases, while dedicated legacy drivers are available for compatible Windows environments.
