Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K: Portable Digital Film Camera
The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K is a compact handheld digital film camera designed for independent filmmakers, videographers, and content creators. Featuring a Four Thirds image sensor and a Micro Four Thirds lens mount, it combines the flexibility of a lightweight portable body with the dynamic range and colour science of high-end cinema hardware.
Sensor Performance and Dynamic Range
The BMPCC 4K is built around a 4/3 HDR image sensor featuring a native resolution of 4096 x 2160. It provides 13 stops of dynamic range, allowing film producers to preserve deep shadow details and bright highlight data simultaneously in high-contrast shooting environments.
The sensor incorporates Dual Native ISO technology, operating at primary base thresholds of ISO 400 and ISO 3200. This dual-gain architecture significantly lowers image noise during low-light shoots, preserving clean colour tones up to an upper limit of ISO 25,600.
Blackmagic RAW and Media Recording
The camera records internally using Blackmagic RAW as well as 10-bit ProRes codecs. Blackmagic RAW combines the quality and editing flexibility of raw video files with smaller file sizes, utilizing intelligent GPU acceleration and embedded metadata to streamline post-production workflows in DaVinci Resolve.
Media recording options are versatile, offering three distinct capture paths: CFast 2.0 cards for high-bitrate RAW capture, SD UHS-II cards for standard 1080p or compressed 4K recording, and a USB-C Expansion Port allowing direct recording onto high-capacity external solid-state drives (SSDs).
Physical Design and Touchscreen Interface
Constructed from a lightweight carbon fibre polycarbonate composite, the camera body is durable and portable for handheld or gimbal operation. The rear of the chassis features a bright 5-inch full-HD LCD touchscreen, which serves as both the primary monitor and navigation panel for the Blackmagic OS menu system. Touch controls allow for quick adjustments to frame rates, shutter angle, iris, white balance, and false colour exposure tools.
The Micro Four Thirds active lens mount is compatible with a wide selection of native MFT lenses, as well as mechanical adapters for EF, PL, or F-mount cinema glass.
